About us

A Family Legacy, Served on Every Plate

The Malay Courtyard isn’t just a restaurant — it’s the story of a family whose love for food spans generations.

At the heart of our kitchen is Head Chef Shubli, a second-generation chef who inherited his passion for cooking from his father, a beloved Malaysian chef who’s been cooking professionally since the 1970s. From the scent of bubbling rendang to the rhythm of chopping sambal ingredients, Shubli grew up with rice in his hands and flavours in his soul. For him, Malaysian food isn’t just a job — it’s his way of life.

Raised in a family where everyone was a chef, the kitchen was his playground, classroom, and sanctuary. That deep-rooted heritage lives on in every dish we serve — from the perfectly balanced Laksa to our home-style Nasi Goreng. Each recipe carries the influence of generations, passed down, perfected, and plated with pride.

We opened The Malay Courtyard to bring authentic halal Malaysian cuisine to Hertfordshire, offering a space where families, friends, and food lovers can gather and feel at home. Every detail, from our warm interiors to the comforting dishes, has been crafted to honour Malaysia’s culinary traditions while embracing a modern, family-friendly dining experience.

Whether you’re discovering Malaysian food for the first time or craving a taste of home, we invite you to sit back, share a meal, and become part of our story.

A Culinary Journey That Started on the Streets of Malaysia

Our story begins with Pak Awie, a street food vendor in 1970s Malaysia, known for his comforting flavours and generous spirit. From running a stall near the Sony factory canteen in the 80s, to moving to the UK in 1997, Pak Awie carried with him the soul of Malaysian cooking.

His journey took him through Indian and Pakistani kitchens, then back to his roots at the Malaysian Hall Canteen and the famous Oriental City Colindale. From 2006 to 2012, he proudly ran the Malaysian Hall Canteen, opened Pak Awie Restaurant, and eventually took over Melur Restaurant in 2016 — becoming a cornerstone of authentic Malaysian cuisine in London.

Now, his legacy lives on through his son, Chef Shubli, here at The Malay Courtyard.

Head Chef Shubli

Head Chef Shubli, son of Pak Awie, was raised in kitchens and food markets. With a deep love for Malaysian cooking, he now brings those flavours to Hertfordshire. Alongside him, Co-Head Chef Farris from Kerala adds South Indian flair, blending traditions to create something beautifully unique.

At The Malay Courtyard, we serve more than just food. We serve memory, culture, and the warmth of shared meals — all in a family-friendly setting designed to make you feel at home.

Whether you’re reconnecting with Malaysian flavours or discovering them for the first time, we invite you to join our story — one unforgettable bite at a time.
